India Solar Compass Q3 2020

India added just 853 MW of solar power generation capacity in Q3 2020 taking total installed solar capacity to 40,295 MW by 30 September 2020. Capacity addition was up 143% QOQ but continues to suffer from COVID related factors including labour and equipment shortages. New capacity addition was split 71:29 between utility scale solar and rooftop solar – 603 MW and 250 MW respectively. Total commissioned utility scale, rooftop solar and off-grid solar capacity stands at 33,100 MW, 6,130 MW and 1,005 MW respectively.

Module prices shot up during the quarter due to supply side constraints like shortage of solar glass in China and disruption of polysilicon supply coupled with increasing demand. Inverter prices were unchanged in the quarter. Total EPC prices increased marginally due to increase in module and BOS costs.

On the policy front, the Ministry of Commerce extended safeguard duty on solar cells and modules for 12 months. Andhra Pradesh issued a renewable power export policy to set up 120 GW solar capacity by 2025.

The report provides a detailed quarterly update of all sector trends and developments – including capacity addition, key players, tender and policy issuance, and equipment prices – as well as outlook for next two quarters.
